Solomon Island Earthquake: On February 6, 2013, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 triggered a tsunami on the Solomon Islands. The US geological survey said Wednesday's earthquake struck 81 km (50 miles) west of Lata at a depth of 28.7 km. So far, it's damaged 70-80 homes and has left several people missing, presumably dead. The Solomon Islands comprise of more than 200 islands with a population of about 552,000 people. The islands lie on the "Ring of Fire" – an arc that stretches around the Pacific rim and where about 90% of the world's earthquakes occur so this wasn't very surprising. Sadly, in the last major earthquake, more than 50 people were killed and thousands lost their homes in April 2007 when a magnitude-8.1 earthquake hit the western Solomon Islands, sending waves crashing into coastal villages.
